Visual art and handmade craft from the Black Isle
Inspired by landscape and sustainable making
BIPA Studio is a creative practice based on the Black Isle in the Scottish Highlands, bringing together visual art, craft, and regenerative making. It is a shared space for work that is rooted in place, shaped by landscape, and guided by a low impact approach to living and creating.
The studio is home to two interconnected practices.
Clive’s art practice explores painting, collage, photography, and experimental works that respond to the landscapes, architecture, spaces, and places I inhabit and explore, drawing upon a deep connection to the environment.
Working with watercolour, charcoal, found materials, and paper based processes, the work is informed by wabi sabi and Casualist influences, embracing imperfection, impermanence, and the unfinished. Light and space are central, allowing the viewer to move through the work like a landscape, pausing, looking, and thinking.
Alongside this is Julie’s craft practice, making useful, durable handmade pieces from recycled and repurposed fabrics. Cushions, curtains, clothing, and bags are created using knitting, crochet, and sewing, giving new life to existing materials.
These pieces are guided by the same principles as the studio art practice. Resourcefulness, simplicity, and attention to material are central, with a focus on low impact making and everyday use.
Together, these practices form BIPA Studio. A space where art and craft meet through shared values of sustainability and attentive making.
